Motorists heading abroad 'must call insurer in good time'

Motorists who are planning to use their car in foreign countries have been urged by an insurance company to call their provider "in good time" before they go.

AA has stated that drivers need to ensure they are covered for using their vehicles abroad and, if so, whether the policy is comprehensive when the car is used outside of the UK.

Ian Crowder, the company's public relations manager, said that people need to let their insurers know about their travel arrangements so they can increase the cost of a premium for a few days if necessary.

However, he added that some comprehensive cover policies may mean there is no need for people to tell their insurers where they are going.

According to figures by the RAC Foundation, three million British motorists travel into mainland Europe via ferry and the channel tunnel every year.

The same study also found that UK motorists travelling in Spain and Portugal are three times more likely to be involved in a fatal accident.ADNFCR-1054-ID-18483582-ADNFCR
